How to Build a Flag Football Playbook (5v5 and 7v7)

A good flag football playbook is short, simple, and built around a few things your team can run from multiple looks. You do not need fifty plays. You need a handful of concepts your players know cold, plus the tools to get them on the field fast. Here is how to build one.
## 1. Start with your format
Flag rules vary by league and state, so build for the game you actually play. The NFL Flag standard is 5-on-5 on a 30-yard by 70-yard field, with 50 yards from goal line to goal line. Many rec and school leagues play 6-on-6 or 7-on-7, and high school girls flag formats differ by state association. A few rules shape almost every playbook:
- There is no blocking, and every player is an eligible receiver.
- In most 5v5 leagues the quarterback must throw within about seven seconds.
- No-run zones near midfield and the end zone force a pass, so you need quick-hitting throws there.
Confirm your league's format and no-run zones first. Everything else is built on top of that.
## 2. Pick two or three base formations
Keep your alignments simple so players can line up fast and you can run many plays from the same look. A trips set, a 2x2 spread, and a stack or bunch are plenty for most teams. Running several plays from one formation is what makes a defense guess.
## 3. Build around a few core concepts, not fifty plays
The concepts that win in flag are the ones that beat coverage quickly: quick slants (your best blitz beater), mesh (the go-to against man coverage), smash (a premier red-zone concept), corners and outs (attack the sideline), and motion and misdirection for your run game, since there is no blocking. Install two or three, then rep them from each formation.
## 4. Draw it once, reuse it all season
